How to Organize Books Without Buying a Shelf
A book collection does not need a dedicated shelf to look intentional. With a little sorting and a few sturdy surfaces, you can store paperbacks, cookbooks, and the mysterious books you keep “meaning to read” without turning your home into a literary obstacle course.
Start With a Small Edit
Gather every book from bedrooms, coffee tables, bags, and the chair currently serving as a wardrobe. Sort them into four groups:
- Keep and read often
- Keep but read occasionally
- Donate or sell
- Lend out or return
Be honest about duplicates. You probably do not need three copies of The Great Gatsby, even if one has a particularly handsome cover. Donate usable books to your local library’s sale, Little Free Library, or a charity shop such as Goodwill.
Use the Space You Already Have
