The 30-Minute Cleaning Speedrun That Covers the Whole Flat
A full-flat clean in 30 minutes is not deep cleaning. It is a tactical operation: make the rooms look, smell and feel reset before the timer judges you. Put on a 30-minute playlist, open a window, and accept that the oven interior can continue its long diplomatic isolation.
Set Up a Grab-and-Go Kit
Before starting, collect everything in one tote: a microfibre cloth, multipurpose spray, bathroom cleaner, bin bags, a sponge, glass cleaner and a cordless vacuum. I use Method All-Purpose Cleaner for surfaces and Cif Power & Shine Bathroom Spray for the sink and shower; use what you already have, but avoid switching products halfway through.
Start a 30-minute timer on your phone. The rule is simple: do not leave a room to fetch something. That is how a quick clean becomes an accidental tour of every cupboard you own.
Minutes 0–8: Clear the Visual Clutter
Begin in the living room and move clockwise through the flat. Pick up obvious stray items and return them only to their correct room—not their perfect drawer. Shoes go by the bedroom door, mugs go in the kitchen, post goes into one pile.
- Empty every small bin into one rubbish bag.
- Collect laundry in a basket or tote.
- Fold throws and straighten cushions.
- Put dishes beside the sink; do not start washing them yet.
- Wipe crumbs and coffee rings from tables.
This alone makes a flat look about 60% cleaner, despite requiring no special skill beyond bending at the knees occasionally.
Minutes 8–18: Kitchen and Bathroom Blitz
In the kitchen, spray the worktops, hob and sink, then leave the product for two minutes while you load or stack dishes. Wipe from cleanest to grubbiest: counters first, then hob, then sink. Finish by replacing the tea towel if it smells faintly of regret.
In the bathroom, spray the basin, taps, toilet seat and shower screen. Wipe the basin and taps with a microfibre cloth, use toilet paper or a dedicated cloth for the toilet, then give the mirror a quick pass with glass cleaner. Swap in a fresh hand towel if guests are likely.
Minutes 18–30: Floors and Final Pass
Vacuum high-traffic areas only: hallway, kitchen, bathroom and the centre of each room. A Dyson-style cordless vacuum is ideal, but a broom is faster than postponing the job because the charger is missing.
Do a final lap with the rubbish bag, switch off harsh lights, and check the three places people notice first: kitchen sink, bathroom basin and floor. If those are clean, the flat reads as clean. Your skirting boards may know the truth, but they will not tell.
FAQ
What if I only have 15 minutes?
Clear clutter, clean the kitchen sink and bathroom basin, empty bins, then vacuum the hallway and living-room centre. It is the cleaning equivalent of wearing a good jacket over questionable decisions.
