Minimalism: What to Throw Out First

By Ethan Cole · Apr 10, 2026 · 2 min read

Minimalism does not require owning one bowl, one chair, and an alarming amount of beige fabric. Start with the items that create clutter without providing much value. The goal is not to make your home look like a furniture showroom; it is to make daily life easier.

Begin With Expired and Broken Things

Check the bathroom, kitchen, and junk drawer first. Throw out expired sunscreen, dried-up mascara, mystery sauces, cracked food containers, and cables for devices you no longer own. Medicines should be handled according to local disposal guidance; many pharmacies, including CVS and Walgreens locations, accept certain expired medications.

Use a simple rule: if something has been broken for six months and you have not arranged a repair, it is probably a donation to the landfill waiting for paperwork.

Empty the “Just in Case” Zone

Open the closet, garage, or cabinet where things go when you cannot decide. Remove anything you have not used in the past 12 months, unless it is seasonal, legally important, or genuinely expensive to replace.

Be especially suspicious of duplicates:

  • Keep two bath towels per regular household member, plus two spare towels.
  • Keep one everyday set of measuring cups and one backup set at most.
  • Keep three sets of sheets per bed: one on the bed, one in the wash, and one spare.
  • Keep one basic toolkit, not four screwdrivers inherited from unrelated toolkits.

If you own camping equipment or formalwear, use a two-year rule instead. These items may be occasional necessities, but “perhaps at some point” is not a storage strategy.

Reduce Clothing Without Creating a Costume

Take every item off the hanger and ask whether you wore it in the last year. For clothes that remain, check fit, comfort, and condition. A shirt that requires special underwear, constant ironing, and emotional negotiation is not an easy shirt.

Start by removing five items: one uncomfortable pair of shoes, two duplicate basics, one stained garment, and one item kept for a fantasy version of your life. Put them in a donation bag and place it in your car within 24 hours. Goodwill, local shelters, and textile-recycling bins may accept different categories, so check before dropping things off.

Make Removal Immediate

Create three containers: donate, recycle, and dispose. Set a 15-minute timer and finish one drawer. Donations should leave the house within seven days. Otherwise, they become a second collection.

FAQ

### What should I throw out first if I feel overwhelmed?

Start with visible rubbish, expired products, and broken items. Fill one small bag, stop after 20 minutes, and remove the bag from your living space immediately. A modest completed session is more useful than an ambitious plan involving color-coded labels.
